Importance of RCD in consumer units.

An RCD (residual current device) is a life-saving device which is designed to prevent you from getting a fatal electric shock if you touch something live, such as a bare wire. It provides a level of protection that ordinary fuses or circuit breakers cannot. The third amendment to BS 7671:2015 (IET Wiring Regulations Seventeenth Edition), which was published in January and came into effect on 1 July 2016, will include a new regulation requiring consumer units and similar switchgear assemblies in domestic premises to have a non-combustible enclosure. *All wooden backed fuse boxes and high integrity plastic no longer comply with current regulations.   For new installations and rewires, all socket-outlets with a rated current not exceeding 20A need to have additional protection by RCD.
